What Discord mentions do
User mentions notify someone directly. Role mentions ping everyone with that role if permissions allow it.
Channel mentions create clickable links to another room. Custom emoji mentions render server emoji outside their home guild when the syntax is correct.
Mention syntax by type
Users use angle brackets with an at sign and ID: <@123>. Roles add an ampersand: <@&456>. Channels use a hash: <#789>.
Custom emoji wrap the name and ID with colons. Animated emoji add a leading a before the colons.
