What is Discord text formatting?
Discord messages support a subset of markdown. Wrapping text in asterisks makes it italic, double asterisks make it bold, and double pipes create spoiler tags that hide content until clicked.
Unlike full markdown editors, Discord does not support headings or links in regular chat messages. The formatting options are tuned for short chat lines and announcements.
Common Discord formatting styles
Bold uses **double asterisks**, italic uses *single asterisks*, underline uses __double underscores__, and strikethrough uses ~~tildes~~. Spoilers hide text behind a gray bar until the reader clicks.
Inline code uses single backticks. Multi-line code blocks use triple backticks on their own lines. You can stack some styles, but nested combinations may render inconsistently on mobile.
How to use this formatter
Type your message in the input box, pick a style from the dropdown, and copy the output. Paste directly into Discord chat, forum posts, or embed descriptions.
For announcements, run the text through multiple passes if you need different sections formatted differently, or format the most important phrase first.
Formatting in embeds vs chat
Embed titles do not support markdown, but descriptions and field values do. Bot webhook embeds follow the same rules as user messages.
If something looks wrong after posting, check whether you are in a forum post, comment thread, or standard channel. Some clients strip formatting in previews.
Tips for readable messages
Use bold for labels and sparingly for emphasis. Long bold paragraphs are harder to read than one highlighted phrase.
Pair formatted announcements with a Discord timestamp so event times stay clear across timezones.
